How to Mask Multiple Areas in a Mac Screen Recording

Hide emails, account details and client names in the same frame with Fancy Rec's multi-region masks. Keep your demo readable without masking the whole screen.

Your account is in the top corner. A customer's email is in the sidebar. Their company name appears in a table. You need to show the workflow, but those three details should stay out of the finished video.

Fancy Rec now lets you mask multiple areas of a screen recording at the same time. Add a separate region for each sensitive detail, adjust each box independently, and keep the useful interface between them visible. You can prepare all the regions in one project before exporting.

Why Screen Studio users asked for multiple masks

The need is easy to recognize in Screen Studio's public feedback. In the Multiple Mask Layers request, opened on May 12, 2025, users described having to cover a larger area or process the recording again to hide another detail. A September 13, 2025 comment described rendering the first mask before editing the second; an October 14 comment described blurring half the screen when sensitive information was scattered across a view.

These are dated user reports, rather than a claim about every current Screen Studio version. They describe the editing problem that motivated this Fancy Rec feature: several private details can appear in one frame, while the space between them still matters to the explanation.

If that is why you are looking for a Screen Studio alternative with multiple masks, the workflow below shows how Fancy Rec handles it. For a broader product overview, see our Screen Studio alternative guide.

What are multi-region masks?

A multi-region mask contains several separate boxes that cover different parts of the same frame. In Fancy Rec, regions within a mask segment share its timeline range and mask type. Each region has its own position and size.

For example, one segment can cover an account name, an email address and a client name for the same passage. If a detail appears for a different duration, use a separate mask segment with its own timing. Overlapping mask segments can render together.

Detail to cover Place a region over Keep visible
Signed-in account The account name or identifier Navigation and the main workspace
Customer email The address in the contact panel Field labels and the next action
Client name The relevant table cell or heading Status columns and the workflow
Internal workspace name The workspace label The controls used in the demo

This is useful for SaaS product demos, support walkthroughs and training videos where the audience needs to understand a real interface without seeing every value in it.

How to hide multiple sensitive areas in Fancy Rec

1. Find the passage you want to share

Open the recording in the editor and pause where the sensitive details are visible. Identify every place the information appears, including repeated names in headers, sidebars and tables.

When planning a new recording, start with sample data where possible. Our Mac product demo guide explains how to organize the walkthrough around a clear task.

2. Add a Sensitive Data mask

Create a mask segment on the Mask timeline and choose Sensitive Data in the mask editor. Position and resize the first region over the first detail. Set the segment's duration to cover the full passage in which that information is visible.

Choose Sensitive Data when you want to conceal information. Highlight is for drawing attention to an area and is not a substitute for covering private text.

3. Use Add region for the other details

In Mask regions, click Add region for the email address, client name or other item you also need to cover. Move and resize each new box in the preview.

Adding a region keeps the current preview time, so you can work through the details in the frame you are already inspecting. You do not need to export the first region before preparing the next one.

4. Match each region to its preview number

While editing the selected mask, the preview shows numbers corresponding to Region 1, Region 2 and the other entries in the sidebar. Use them to identify which box you are adjusting or removing.

Dragging or resizing one region preserves the others. The numbers are editing aids and do not appear in the exported video.

5. Review timing, then export

Play through the whole masked passage, including its beginning and end. If the page scrolls or the layout changes, check the coverage again: regions cover positions in the recording, rather than automatically following a person's name or email. Use another timed mask segment when a detail changes position.

Once all the regions and their timing are ready, export your recording. Check the resulting file at its intended viewing size before sharing it.

Keep the explanation visible around the masks

Imagine a support video showing how to update a customer record. Covering the account, email and client name with one large rectangle could also hide the status selector and Save button. Separate regions let you cover those values while leaving the action understandable.

The same principle applies to a dashboard walkthrough: place boxes over the private values and leave the relevant chart, filters and navigation visible. Adjust coverage around the content you need to conceal, while preserving the context your viewer needs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hide several emails or names in the same frame?

Yes. Add a region for each visible item. Fancy Rec renders the regions together, including regions from mask segments whose time ranges overlap.

Does each region have a separate duration?

Regions in the same segment share its duration. Create separate mask segments when different details need different start or end times.

Does Fancy Rec automatically detect sensitive information?

Fancy Rec 2.2 adds automatic sensitive data detection: analyze the current frame on your Mac and generate editable regions for emails, phone numbers and other supported fields. You still review coverage and set the timing. It does not track text through scrolling.

Will the region numbers appear in my export?

No. Numbers help you match the preview boxes to the sidebar during editing. The exported video includes the mask effect without those labels or resize handles.

Does masking remove information from the original recording?

The mask changes the rendered video. It does not erase the original recording or the editable project's source media. When the source contains private details, share the reviewed export rather than the original project.

Cover the private details. Keep the demo useful.

For your next walkthrough, try covering an account, an email and a client name in the same frame. Adjust the three regions, review the passage, and prepare a single finished export with all of them applied.
