How to Screen Record on Mac: Sound, Shortcuts & Demo Tips
Record your Mac screen with the right audio. Learn recording shortcuts, where videos save, QuickTime and OBS options, and how to make a polished demo.
Quick answer: Press Command + Shift + 5, choose a recording area, check Options, and start recording. Stop from the menu bar or with Command + Control + Escape. For narration, select your microphone before you begin.
Need to record your Mac screen? Whether it's a quick capture or a polished product demo, macOS gives you several options. Here's how each method works — and when to use it.
Method 1: macOS Built-in Screen Recording (Quickest)
The fastest way to record your screen on any Mac:
- Press Cmd + Shift + 5
- Choose "Record Entire Screen" or "Record Selected Portion"
- Click Record
- Click the stop button in the menu bar when done
Your recording saves to the Desktop by default.
Pros: Zero setup, built into every Mac. Cons: No zoom effects, no editing, no webcam overlay, basic quality settings.
Best for: Quick, informal captures.
Method 2: Fancy Rec (Best for Professional Demos)
If your recordings need to look professional — product demos, tutorials, or marketing videos — a dedicated tool makes a huge difference.
- Download Fancy Rec and open the task you want to demonstrate
- Choose your recording area: full screen, window, or custom region
- Enable webcam and microphone if needed
- Click Record
- Fancy Rec automatically adds smooth zoom effects on your clicks
- Edit, add captions, and export
What makes it different:
- Auto zoom follows your cursor and zooms into clicks automatically
- AI captions generate subtitles from your narration
- iOS recording captures iPhone/iPad screens directly
Best for: Product demos, tutorials, marketing videos, and any recording that needs to look polished.
Method 3: QuickTime Player (Simple & Reliable)
QuickTime has been a macOS staple for years:
- Open QuickTime Player → File → New Screen Recording.
- If the Screenshot toolbar appears, choose your recording area and check Options before starting.
- Stop from the menu bar, then open the saved file to review or trim it.
Older macOS versions may show a separate QuickTime recording window. Follow the controls your Mac displays rather than mixing the two workflows. See Apple's recording instructions.
QuickTime is useful for opening and trimming a simple recording. For a narrated product walkthrough with zoom and captions, use the Fancy Rec workflow above.
Method 4: OBS Studio (Maximum Control)
OBS is free, open source, and incredibly powerful — but comes with a learning curve:
- Download OBS Studio from obsproject.com
- Add a macOS Screen Capture source
- Configure your audio inputs
- Click "Start Recording"
Pros: Free, extremely customizable, supports multiple scenes and sources. Cons: Steep learning curve, no auto-zoom, requires manual setup.
Best for: Streamers and technical users who need granular control.
How to screen record on Mac with sound
Microphone audio is your voice; system audio is sound from apps or media. Selecting a microphone does not automatically select your computer's audio.
| What viewers need to hear | What to check before recording |
|---|---|
| Your explanation | Select the intended microphone and speak a test sentence |
| App sounds or playback | Enable system audio in a recorder that supports it |
| Both | Enable both sources and check that app sound does not overpower your voice |
| No sound | Disable both inputs and review the result |
In Screenshot, check Options for the audio choices available on your macOS version. If there is no system-audio option, choosing the built-in microphone is not a substitute for direct app-audio capture.
Fancy Rec supports microphone and system audio. Record a short sample, play it back, and follow the audio guide before recording a long tutorial. Use headphones to reduce speaker sound being picked up again by your microphone.
For OBS, the official guide documents native desktop/app audio capture on macOS 13 and later; OBS 30 and later also offers a macOS Audio Capture source. Setup on older systems differs. Follow the OBS audio guide for your version.
Where does a Mac screen recording save?
Screenshot saves to the Desktop by default. Check Options → Save to before your next recording if you want a different location. A recording made with a third-party app may stay in that app's project library until you export it.
For Fancy Rec, review the project, then follow the MP4 and GIF export guide. Choose MP4 for a narrated tutorial; GIF is useful for a short, silent loop.
Fix missing sound, black screens and small text
| Problem | First things to check |
|---|---|
| Your voice is missing | Selected microphone, input level and the app's microphone permission |
| App audio is missing | System-audio capture is enabled, rather than only microphone capture |
| The screen is blank | Selected capture source and screen-recording permission; reopen the app if macOS requests it |
| Text is hard to read | Capture a smaller area or enlarge the source text before recording |
| Your face covers a control | Change the camera position or use a different layout |
On recent macOS versions, review recording, microphone and camera access in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Permission names vary by version. Some protected content cannot be captured; do not assume a black playback window is an export problem.

See what automatic zoom adds to a demo
A quick capture preserves the action. A focused demo helps the viewer notice the button, setting and result. This example shows Fancy Rec's zoom effect:
Follow the auto zoom guide to balance detail and context. If you present on camera, use the screen and camera workflow to keep controls visible.
Tips for Better Screen Recordings
No matter which tool you use, these tips will improve your output:
Before Recording
- Close unnecessary apps and browser tabs
- Turn on Do Not Disturb to prevent notification pop-ups
- Resize your window to 16:9 (1920x1080) for clean embedding
- Use a clean browser profile without bookmarks or extensions
During Recording
- Slow your mouse movements — viewers need time to follow
- Pause before clicking so viewers can see what you're about to do
- Narrate your actions if adding voiceover
After Recording
- Trim dead space at the beginning and end
- Add captions for accessibility (Fancy Rec does this automatically with AI)
- Export at 1080p for the best balance of quality and file size
Which Method Should You Choose?
| Need | Best Method |
|---|---|
| Quick one-off capture | Cmd + Shift + 5 |
| Professional product demo | Fancy Rec |
| Simple .mov recording | QuickTime |
| Live streaming + recording | OBS Studio |
