Screen & sound recording

Capture the right screen and the sound your audience needs. A short test before the full take is the easiest way to catch a missing voice or the wrong window.

01Choose your recording source

Open Fancy Rec and choose the screen, window, or area you want to record. Decide where the task will happen before you start; a tightly framed window is useful only if the important action stays inside it.

SourceWhen to choose itCheck before recording
Entire screenA workflow across multiple appsHide unrelated windows, notifications, and private information.
WindowA walkthrough of one appMake text readable and check that menus and dialogs appear in the test.
Selected regionA small, fixed part of the screenKeep every important control and result inside the selected area.

02Set up your sound

Microphone audio is your voice; system audio is sound played by the Mac. Choose the sources your demonstration needs. Enabling a microphone alone does not mean app playback is being captured.

  1. Select the microphone you intend to use and enable it for a narrated recording.
  2. Enable system audio when demonstrating something with its own sound.
  3. Use headphones when app audio might play back into your microphone.
  4. If you are using a camera, enable it before starting and check the preview.

03Allow the required permissions

When macOS asks for access, allow screen recording for screen capture, microphone access for your voice, and camera access for your camera. If access was previously denied, check Fancy Rec in System Settings → Privacy & Security. The screen-recording permission label varies between macOS versions.

Follow any prompt to reopen Fancy Rec. Recheck the selected sources after reopening; granting permission alone is not a substitute for a test recording.

04Record, stop, and review

Record a few seconds of the actual task, including a spoken sentence and any app sound you need. Stop the recording and play it in the editor.

  1. Confirm that the intended window or region is visible.
  2. Listen for your voice and the app sound separately.
  3. Check that menus, dialogs, and the pointer remain inside the recorded area.
  4. Only begin the full take after the test captures what you need.
