Getting started

Start with one short walkthrough: show an action, explain what changes, and export a video you can share. This guide takes you through the workflow without trying every setting at once.

01Prepare a short demo

Download and open Fancy Rec. Pick one task to demonstrate, such as creating a project or changing a setting. Open the app you want to show and close private tabs or documents before recording.

Recording and editing are free. You can explore the editor before choosing a plan; downloading the app does not start the 7-day export trial.

02Choose what to record

Choose your recording source: an entire screen, an application window, or a selected region. Use a window for a focused walkthrough; use the entire screen when the task moves between apps.

Enable your microphone if you want narration, and your camera if you want to appear in the video. When macOS asks for recording, microphone, or camera access, allow the permissions needed for your chosen sources. Follow any prompt to reopen the app.

03Make a short test recording

Start recording, speak a sentence, and perform a few clicks. Stop and review the result before recording your full walkthrough. Check that the intended screen was captured and that your voice is audible.

For the full take, show the starting state, carry out the task, then pause briefly on the result. Keep your pointer still while explaining so the audience can follow the action.

04Review and polish

Play the recording in the editor. Review the automatic zoom around your actions: the viewer should still understand where each action happens. Check the beginning, transitions, and final result.

Open Background & Screen to choose a background and adjust padding, rounded corners, and shadows. If you add captions, check product names and technical terms against your narration before exporting.

Automatic zoom in action. This example shows the recording effect, rather than the setup steps.

05Export and check the finished file

Choose MP4 for a narrated walkthrough. Choose GIF for a short, silent interaction in a document or message; GIF does not carry your voice. Use the export settings available in your installed version.

MP4 and GIF export require an active subscription or trial. A 7-day trial requires a payment method; cancel before it ends to avoid a charge. Otherwise your chosen plan renews at $3.99/month or $35.88/year ($2.99/month billed annually). Both plans support 3 personal Macs.

Open the exported file before sharing. Check text readability at the size your audience will watch, listen to the audio for MP4, and confirm that no private information is visible.

Put this into your next recording

Recording and editing are free. Choose a plan when you are ready to export.
